It is not a secret that much of adult content is marketed primarily toward men, and this applies to both mainstream and amateur porn. You can often tell in a few ways. First, many videos are shot from a male POV, putting the viewer in the position of the male performer. Second, the male gaze dominates, with a heavy focus on physical attributes like large boobs, butts and dicks. And third, male pleasure tends to be the main focus, while female pleasure is often secondary—or sometimes even absent entirely, as when female performers don’t get to orgasm on camera. Does this seem fair to you? Because it certainly doesn’t to me.
Stats about female Pornhub viewers by country
Let’s look at some recent statistics about porn consumers and see what percentage of viewers by country are women. According to a 2023 survey about Pornhub audiences, women make up 29% of porn consumers in the United States and the UK. This number is not small by any means. But let’s look at the stats in other parts of the world! In the Philippines, 58% of porn consumers are women, followed by Colombia with 50% of female viewership and Argentina with 47% of porn consumers being women. This is a clear proof that a significant number of viewers are not cis straight men. In a nutshell – the demand doesn’t quite match the supply.

Queer and female-focused porn throughout history
Now that you know a significant amount of porn viewers are not straight cis men, it’s time to take a look at queer porn in our history. Back in the 70s, porn was mostly accessible in adult movie theaters and mainstream porn heavily catered to cis men. Queer and women-focused porn was nearly non-existent. However, the 70s was also the time when underground feminist and queer erotica began appearing in zines and small publications. Those were the first steps towards queer and women-focused porn that is gaining popularity today.
A decade later, in the 80s, the rise of VHS brought porn into homes, increasing the accessibility slightly. Queer women’s representation started appearing in small, independent productions, however, it was still viewed through a male gaze. Meanwhile trans representation in porn during this time was very rare and often fetishized. During the 90s, DVDs expanded niche markets. Queer porn for women gradually started becoming more popular, mostly thanks to early feminist pioneers like Candida Royale who made porn with real female pleasure in mind. Trans performers were slowly gaining visibility in niche productions, but mainstream porn still fetishized them.

Finally, in the 2000s, internet porn changed the game, allowing independent queer and trans creators to reach their audience directly. In 2005, Shine Louise Huston created Pink and White Productions, centering consent and diversity of performers more than anything. Things also started looking up for trans porn performers who could finally star in adult content that actually respected their identities. And starting from the 2010s until now, amateur porn has blown up thanks to the internet and amateur porn sites. It has made space for authentic queer, trans and non-binary experiences and showing off performers with all kinds of looks.
Then vs now – progress and future goals in queer and women-focused porn
Looking back at the history of porn throughout the past 5 decades or so, it is clear that our industry has made a huge progress towards inclusivity and diversity. Porn has also become more accessible than a couple of decades ago. (Well, at least for now.) Yet the diversity and inclusivity extends to performers more than the actual audience. How do I know? Both from lived experiences as a performer and an amateur porn consumer.

I’m tired of browsing through dozens of pages on porn sites just to find something that resonates with me. A lot of times certain thoughts run through my mind. Thoughts like: “Why can’t I find a video that features my body type? Why did he got to cum twice, but she didn’t cum at all? Does she actually enjoy eating pussy or is this all just for show? Why do they always think that faster and harder is somehow… better?”
These are just some thoughts that come to my mind while looking for enjoyable porn as a bisexual, curvy woman. I can’t even imagine how my trans and non-binary colleagues and friends feel when they see that the majority of porn, even on amateur porn sites, often don’t include things that they resonate with.
It is 2025 which is the right time to realise that amateur porn consumers come in all genders, sizes, sexual orientations and looks. Looking back at the huge progress that the adult industry has already made, I can only hope that amateur porn will become even more diverse and inclusive not only for the performers, but also for the viewers themselves. Everybody deserves to not only experience sexual pleasure, but also enjoy amateur porn that resonates with them. One that portrays their bodies regardless of the size, ability or colour and one that portrays authentic pleasure and real orgasms.
